My Story
I am a highly experienced Foot and Ankle surgeon who specializes in all foot and ankle conditions. I am known nationally and internationally for ankle replacement surgery and have many international presentations and research publications. As Chief Investigator of Research in foot and ankle, I regularly run multidisciplinary meetings, publish, speak and present. I have written chapters in textbooks and am widely published in international foot and ankle journals.
CURRENTLY
I am a Professor of Orthopedics at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. I am actively involved in teaching, training and supervision of research projects in ankle replacement, implant survival, retrieval, analysis and outcome. Many studies are ongoing for ankle replacement, charcot joints, activity monitoring and gait analysis and collaborative work is being done along with four university hospitals in UK.I am also the Chair of the Foot and Ankle Specialty in the NENC committee.
AREA OF INTERESTS
My special interests lie in the surgery of the ankle for sports injuries, cartilage regeneration for early arthritis, reconstruction of unstable ankles, ankle replacement, ankle fusion, Achilles tendon reconstruction, treatment of bunions, hammertoes, Morton’s neuromas, flat foot and pes cavus correction.

Book appointmentTARVA(Total Ankle Replacement Vs Arthrodesis) National trial : Surgical lead and Principal Investigator 2016-19:
I recruited the highest number of patients outside the Primary Investigator Centre (UCL, London). I organised regional meetings, developed joint themes on Total Ankle Replacement Vs Arthrodesis for ankle arthritis treatment and supported Consultant led research groups.
Academic Director (Foot & Ankle) 2015 till date:
I restructured clinical and research activity, pooled all clinical resources improving research activity to generate high quality projects, prospective studies and private and commercial funds.
2015-18:
Delivery of Trust research using new SLS set up after pilot study. High quality research output, highest investigator led studies and presentations at national and international levels.
Ankle Arthritis Research Group: Lead Foot and Ankle surgeon research group for surgeons and scientist to collaborate more effectively with UCL University.
2016:

National/Regional Clinical Excellence:
My high volume clinical & research activity in ankle replacement led to the development & recognition of Freeman Hospital as one of the two best ankle replacement outcome centres in UK.
My outcomes are audited & published in national and international journals. I have presented at American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society and British Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (which are available online at ResearchGate and Google Scholar)
Service Development:
I have successfully secured funding for the Innovated new SLS facility. This has increased patient satisfaction from 85% to 96%. The productivity has improved from 650 to 850 new patients. There has been a reduction of in & out-patient. This lab is recognized in UK as the best example of research translation into clinical practice.
Chair Foot & Ankle (Alliance NENC):
Currently, I am also serving as the Chair Foot & Ankle for Alliance NENC.
Development of foot drop service:
I developed this special assessment service for Foot Drop condition which can be due to nerve injures and stroke. The service helps with the rehabilitation and correct treatment by operation/nerve stimulation procedures. The project was funded by the industry and NHS grant. I also supervised PhD students for sensorimotor learning for control of prosthetic limbs project (2018-22).
I have performed 40+ ankle replacements every year since 2000. This involved revising painful/failed ankle replacement implants. I perform 6-10 revision ankle replacements every year. All of this data is available on the National Joint Register.
